POSITION START DATE: Upon Hire

 

TITLE:  Behavior Instructional Assistant — Elementary, Middle and High School

                                                 

REPORTS TO:   School Administrator and/or designee

 

 

HIGHLY QUALIFIED REQUIRED

 

The definition of Highly Qualified is:
 
You must have:
  • Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education obtaining at least 36 credits per year, or
  • Obtained an Associates (or higher) degree, or
  • Obtained a Paraprofessional Certificate 

 

PURPOSE

 

The Educational Assistant assists the teacher in the instruction of students whose educational needs are primarily the result of significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. The Assistant may be assigned to educational programs located in public school, residential treatment, or day treatment programs. 

  

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Receives supervision from Administrator and may receive guidance and direction from Administrative Assistant and/or behavior specialist.  Exercises no supervision.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Working knowledge of the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
  • Knowledge of techniques and methods of student supervision and classroom management in settings involving students with moderate to severe learning and/or physical disabilities and/or social/behavioral problems
  • Positive attitude and works well with children
  • Comprehend and follow written and oral instructions and complete work within established timelines
  •  Flexible and able to work harmoniously with others
  • Willing to learn and implement new programs
  • Proficient English usage, grammar and punctuation skills
  • Basic technology skills
  • Posses or ability to obtain First Aid certification
  • Ability to stay calm during high stress situations

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assists teaching individual and small groups of students academic curriculum (K-12) which has been specially designed by the teacher
  • Assists regular education teachers with students in mainstream settings
  • Implements social skills instruction and behavior intervention plans specially designed by the behavior/treatment staff utilizing crisis prevention intervention strategies including, when necessary, the use of safe restraint techniques
  • Communicates with students during instruction and interpersonal interaction using language structure, tone and body language that promotes positive student behavior, conflict resolution and problem solving, effective management of power struggles, and applies proactive strategies for management of escalating behavior
  • Collects and records data on student's academic and behavior progress
  • Supervises students during recess, breaks, and lunch, and escorts students to various locations in the facility including to and from the bus and/or classrooms
  • Communicates, as a member of the classroom team, with other education staff, behavior/treatment staff and parents, under the direction or upon request of the behavior specialist
  • Prepares materials for instructional activities designed by the teacher and completes routine clerical tasks
  • Assists with maintenance of a clean, safe and healthy classroom
  • Serves as the primary source of information and assistance to substitute teachers assigned to the classroom
  • Provides students a safe and secure environment at all times.  This may include Green Room facilitation and supervision, playground supervision, crosswalk duty, cafeteria duty and small group management
  • Attends workshop training related to area of assignment; applying training to instructional and supervision responsibilities
  • Helps students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults; promote safety of the students by helping them develop self-confidence
  • Maintains a confidential, non-preferential, non-judgmental manner towards the students, staff and program
  • Administers minor first aid

EVALUATION

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Sherwood School District 88J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter #103.
