HOURS:  4 hrs/day - .5 FTE

TITLE:  Instructional Assistant II (ELD) - Elementary

REPORTS TO:  School Administrator and/or designee

 

*Must be considered Highly Qualified to apply*

 
   The definition of Highly Qualified is:
  • Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education obtaining at least 36 credits per year, or
  • Obtained an Associates (or higher) degree, or 
  • Obtained a Paraprofessional Certificate through Praxis

 

PURPOSE

 

To improve student achievement by performing duties related to the assessment and enrollment of emerging bilinguals and English learners in the District’s instructional programs. Provide instructional and non-instructional support to students under the supervision and guidance of a licensed teacher.  This may require an instructional setting separate from the teacher, but within the framework of a teacher-planned and evaluated program; assist in providing home-school communication with non-English speaking parents.

 

This is the mid-level class within the Instructional Assistant series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Instructional Assistant I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including the exercise of independent thinking, judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making.  This class is distinguished from the Instructional Assistant III by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

 

Receives supervision from Administrator and may receive guidance and direction from Administrative Assistant and/or licensed staff.  Exercises no supervision.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to speak, read and/or write Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean or Spanish is desirable but not required
  • Knowledge of practices in the student’s native language and culture
  • Knowledge of basic math and reading skills
  • Ability to interpret educational and social needs of students learning academic English
  • Excellent communication, organizational and management skills with the ability to prioritize and organize workload demands
  • Ability to work effectively with students of diverse cultures
  • Ability to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions
  • Complete work within established timelines
  • Proficient English usage, grammar, and punctuation skills
  • Basic technology skills
  • Communicate with appropriate student age group requiring both empathetic and disciplinarian approaches
  • Flexible and able to work harmoniously with others

 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Assess, test, and place new students into the appropriate school or program; contact parent(s) and school to coordinate the completion of necessary forms and procedures; deal directly with students at the school site
  • Participate in meetings and conferences regarding students’ educational needs and placement
  • Facilitate the enrollment of eligible students in District ELD services
  • Serve as liaison between students and school, school and parents, resource and classroom teacher and other school district programs
  • Provide cultural and linguistic support to classrooms with limited-English students
  • Communicate effectively with parents, including English/foreign language translation
  • Administer English language assessment tests
  • Assist in administering educational programs designed by the ELD/classroom teacher or Teacher on Special Assignment
  • Work effectively in a team situation by demonstrating cross-cultural communication skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire new skills and obtain new information necessary to work effectively with ELD students
  • Help with and/or monitor student’s completion of classroom assignments
  • Provide teachers data to document student progress
  • Provide students with a safe and secure environment, including small group management
  • Clerical support and simple maintenance and operation of school equipment and supplies
  • Prepare instructional materials related to area of assignment

EVALUATION

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Sherwood School District 88J and Oregon School Employees Association Chapter #103.
